Frequently Asked Questions
Leather & Quality
What leather does Alpenleder use?
We use carefully selected natural leathers for our leather goods. Our products are made from high-quality cowhide or buffalo leather, which is vegetable-tanned and subsequently finished with waxes and oils.
It is important to us to preserve the natural character of the leather. Therefore, natural textures are not simply hidden beneath an opaque layer of paint.
What does vegetable-tanned leather mean?
Vegetable tanning uses plant-based tannins. We do not use chromium salts or toxic preservatives.
This traditional tanning method preserves the natural character of the leather. Over time, the leather develops an individual patina – making it increasingly your own personal companion.
Why is the selection of leather at Alpenleder so strict?
Because we cannot and do not want to hide the natural surface of the leather under a thick layer of paint or synthetic material.
For certain products, our selection ratio is up to 1:60. This means: out of up to 60 hides, only one meets our requirements for the respective product.
The reason for this lies in the naturalness of the material. A life lived by an animal leaves marks on the hide – for example, through small injuries, scars, or insect bites. With heavily treated or pigmented leathers, such characteristics can be covered up later.
With our natural leathers, this is not possible. That is why our quality selection begins with the hide itself.
Is every leather bag a unique piece?
Yes. Leather is a natural product and not an industrially manufactured synthetic surface.
Color nuances, grain, wrinkles, and minor irregularities may vary from piece to piece. It is precisely these natural characteristics that define the unique character of the leather.
Therefore, your Alpenleder product may differ slightly from the images in the online shop.
Are scars or irregularities in the leather considered a defect?
Not necessarily. Natural structures are part of genuine leather.
Despite our careful selection, natural characteristics may be visible. They are a reflection of the original hide and cannot be completely ruled out, especially with natural, untreated leather.
Clear material or workmanship defects are, of course, to be distinguished from these.
Why is the color of my leather changing?
Natural leather is alive and changes.
Sunlight, touch, humidity, and the natural oils from your hands influence its surface. Over time, this develops a characteristic patina.
This change is intentional and part of the unique character of high-quality natural leather. Our leather lives on!
What does sustainability mean to Alpenleder?
For us, sustainability primarily means developing products that can be used for as long as possible.
This includes high-quality materials, timeless design, meticulous workmanship, and the possibility of repairing many of our products even years later.
In our own workshop, for example, wearing parts such as zippers, wheels, or other components can be repaired or replaced on many models.
Because we are convinced that a high-quality product should be repaired and reused rather than prematurely replaced.
Why does Alpenleder opt for timeless design?
In our opinion, a high-quality leather bag should not go out of fashion after two or three seasons.
That is why we develop products with a timeless character and place greater value on function and quality than on short-term trends.
Our leather also supports this philosophy. It does not just get older with time – it changes, develops an individual patina, and thus increasingly tells its own story.
A good leather product does not just accompany its owner – it becomes more personal over the years.
Care & handling of leather
How do I properly care for my Alpenleder product?
Carefully remove dust and light dirt with a soft cloth. Our leather is finished with high-quality waxes and oils that keep it supple and preserve its natural character.
Depending on the level of wear, the leather can be additionally treated with a suitable leather care product.
Please do not use any harsh household cleaners or unsuitable chemical detergents.
What can I do about scratches in the leather?
Small scratches and signs of wear can often be easily treated on our waxed and oiled leather.
Carefully warm the affected area with a hair dryer. The heat makes the waxes and oils contained in the leather supple or more fluid again. You can then carefully buff the area with a soft cotton cloth.
Minor scratches often disappear almost completely as a result.
Important: Only warm the leather carefully and from a sufficient distance. It should only become hand-warm and must not overheat under any circumstances.
This is precisely what makes our leather so special: many traces of daily use can be buffed out, while a highly individual patina develops over time.
What should I do if my leather has gotten wet?
Allow the product to dry slowly and naturally at room temperature.
Please never place wet leather directly on a heater and do not dry it with a hairdryer. Excessive or rapid heat can strip moisture from wet leather and cause it to become brittle.
Once completely dry, the leather can be treated with a suitable care product if necessary.
Can leather stain?
With natural or wax- and oil-treated leather, slight color transfer cannot be completely ruled out, especially at the beginning and in damp conditions.
For very light-colored clothing, we therefore recommend exercising some caution, particularly during the initial period.
Warranty & Repair
Does Alpenleder offer a warranty on the leather?
Yes. We stand behind the quality of our leather and offer a lifetime warranty on the leather of our products.
The warranty applies to the leather itself. Wear parts as well as damage caused by improper use, normal wear and tear, or external force are excluded.
Can my Alpenleder product be repaired?
In most cases: yes.
We believe that a high-quality product should not be thrown away just because a wear part is defective.
That is why we can perform repairs on many of our products in our own workshop. Depending on the product, items such as zippers, wheels, or other wear parts can be repaired or replaced.
How do I request a repair?
Please send us a brief description of the problem and, if possible, some informative photos.
We will then check whether a repair is possible and inform you about the next steps and any costs that may arise.
Is every repair free of charge?
No. Whether a repair is covered under our warranty depends on the cause of the damage.
Normal wear and tear, wearing parts, as well as damage caused by improper handling or external influence are generally not covered by the lifetime warranty on the leather.
However, even in such cases, we strive to offer a practical repair solution.
Can I get spare parts for older Alpenleder products?
For many products, we can still help even after a long period of time.
Whether a specific spare part is available depends on the product and its age. It is best to send us a photo of your item along with a brief description of the spare part you need.
What should I do if I can no longer find my product in the online shop?
Our product range is continuously evolving, and individual models may be discontinued over the years.
However, this does not automatically mean that we can no longer assist you with questions, spare parts, or repairs. Simply contact us with a photo or the product name.
