All products manufactured by the traditional company Alpenleder are made exclusively from high-quality "full-grain leather." The term "full" signifies that the surface is not sanded down, allowing the leather's natural texture to remain visible. For this product, we have selected a supple calfskin with a thickness of approximately 1.6 mm. The hides are sustainably tanned using plant extracts. We enhance this effect of natural beauty by hand-polishing our leather with hard wax, making every bag a unique one-of-a-kind item. Only a few parts of a hide are suitable for processing as full-grain leather, which is why only about one in every 60 hides meets our quality standards.
Full-grain buffalo leather is a particularly robust material that develops a beautiful patina over the years and, with proper care, will last for decades. All original Alpenleder products are manufactured in our own production facilities by trained leatherworkers. We place the greatest importance on sustainable processing, and all our suppliers must at least meet the SA 8000 social standard.
All Alpenleder products are manufactured without chemicals or toxins!
We consciously avoid the use of poisons and chemicals frequently used in the leather industry, such as chromium, nickel, synthetic plasticizers, chemical dyes, and chemical preservatives.
For all non-leather specialists:
Think of the difference as being like our leather compared to a natural oak plank versus a formaldehyde-laden particle board—with all the corresponding advantages.

The individual parts are not laser-cut, but are cut by hand using a template and sewn together by hand as well. The result is an indestructible product of the highest quality, with raw materials free of chromium and heavy metals! All products comply with EU REACH regulations. We use only vegetable-tanned full-grain leather for all our products, meaning every item is crafted from an entire hide. These heavy saddle leathers develop their own unique character, and over the years, the patina makes every bag a beloved, one-of-a-kind piece.

About Us

Alpenleder has been impressing customers with honest, characterful products since 1993. Near the Allgäu Alps in southern Germany, the ideas and concepts for high-quality bags and accessories made from soft buffalo and cowhide leather are already being developed by the second generation.

Just like the inhabitants of the Alps, we are equally committed to tradition and the demands of modernity: our products, manufactured using traditional methods, focus on today’s individual and their needs. The high, natural functionality of leather meets classic design, individual character, and long durability.

We are always focused on selecting high-quality materials and ensuring meticulous workmanship. Thus, Alpenleder bags are designed for use over many years or even decades.

We create bags as lifelong companions. They tell stories and leave their mark. Our unique pieces are timeless and enduring; they are sophisticated, yet robust. The powerful and proud animals from which the leather for our products originates embody strength, charisma, and respect. Those who choose our products express a similar outlook on life: individuality instead of mass production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Leather & Quality

What leather does Alpenleder use?

We use carefully selected natural leathers for our leather goods. Our products are made from high-quality cowhide or buffalo leather, which is vegetable-tanned and then finished with waxes and oils.
It is important to us to preserve the natural character of the leather. Therefore, natural textures are not simply hidden under an opaque layer of color.

What does vegetable-tanned leather mean?

Vegetable tanning uses plant-based tannins. We do not use chromium salts or toxic preservatives.
This traditional tanning method preserves the natural character of the leather. Over time, the leather develops an individual patina – making it increasingly your own personal companion.

Why is the selection of leather at Alpenleder so strict?

Because we cannot and do not want to hide the natural surface of the leather under a thick layer of paint or synthetic material.
For certain products, our selection ratio is up to 1:60. This means: out of up to 60 hides, only one meets our requirements for the respective product.
The reason for this lies in the naturalness of the material. An animal's life leaves marks on the hide – for example, through small injuries, scars, or insect bites. In the case of heavily finished or pigmented leathers, such characteristics can be covered up later.
With our natural leathers, this is not possible. That is why our quality selection begins with the hide itself.

Is every leather bag a unique piece?

Yes. Leather is a natural product and not an industrially manufactured synthetic surface.
Color nuances, grain, creases, and minor irregularities may vary from piece to piece. It is precisely these natural characteristics that define the unique nature of the leather.
Therefore, your Alpenleder product may differ slightly from the illustrations in the online shop.

Are scars or irregularities in the leather considered a defect?

Not necessarily. Natural textures are part of genuine leather.
Despite our careful selection, natural characteristics may be visible. They are an expression of the original hide and, particularly with natural leather, cannot be completely ruled out.
Clear material or manufacturing defects are, of course, to be distinguished from these.

Why is the color of my leather changing?

Natural leather is alive and changes over time.
Sunlight, touch, moisture, and the natural oils from your hands influence the surface. Over time, this develops a characteristic patina.
This change is intentional and is part of the special character of high-quality natural leather. Our leather continues to live!

What does sustainability mean for Alpenleder?

For us, sustainability primarily means: developing products so that they can be used for as long as possible.
This includes high-quality materials, timeless design, meticulous workmanship, and the option to repair many of our products even after years of use.
In our own workshop, for example, wear parts such as zippers, wheels, or other components can be repaired or replaced on many models.
Because we are convinced: A high-quality product should be repaired and reused rather than replaced prematurely.

Why does Alpenleder rely on timeless design?

In our opinion, a high-quality leather bag should not go out of fashion after two or three seasons.
That is why we develop products with a timeless character and place greater emphasis on function and quality than on short-term trends.
Our leather also supports this philosophy. It does not just get older over time – it changes, develops an individual patina, and thus increasingly tells its own story.
A good leather product does not just accompany its owner – it becomes more personal as the years go by.

Care & Handling of Leather

How do I properly care for my Alpenleder product?

Carefully remove dust and light dirt with a soft cloth. Our leather is finished with high-quality waxes and oils that keep it supple and preserve its natural character.
Depending on the level of wear, the leather can be treated additionally with a suitable leather care product.
Please do not use aggressive household cleaners or unsuitable chemical detergents.

What can I do about scratches in leather?

Small scratches and signs of wear can often be easily treated on our waxed and oiled leather.
Carefully warm the affected area with a hair dryer. The heat makes the waxes and oils contained in the leather supple or more fluid again. You can then carefully buff out the area with a soft cotton cloth.
Minor scratches often disappear almost completely as a result.
Important: Only warm the leather carefully and from a sufficient distance. It should only become hand-warm and must not overheat under any circumstances.
It is precisely this quality that makes our leather so special: many traces of daily use can be buffed out, while a highly individual patina develops over time.

What should I do if my leather has gotten wet?

Allow the product to dry slowly and naturally at room temperature.
Please never place wet leather directly on a heater and do not dry it with a hairdryer. Excessive or rapid heat can extract moisture from the wet leather and cause it to become brittle.
Once completely dry, the leather can be treated with a suitable care product if necessary.

Can leather bleed?

With natural leather or leather treated with waxes and oils, slight color transfer—especially initially and in humid conditions—cannot be completely ruled out.
For very light-colored clothing, we therefore recommend exercising some caution, especially during the initial period.

Warranty & Repair

Does Alpenleder offer a warranty on the leather?

Yes. We stand behind the quality of our leather and offer a lifetime warranty on the leather of our products.
The warranty applies to the leather itself. Wear parts as well as damage caused by improper use, normal wear and tear, or external force are excluded from this.

Can my Alpenleder product be repaired?

In most cases: yes.
We believe that a high-quality product should not be thrown away just because a wearing part is defective.
That is why we are able to carry out repairs on many of our products in our own workshop. Depending on the product, items such as zippers, wheels, or other wearing parts can be repaired or replaced.

How do I request a repair?

Please send us a brief description of the problem and, if possible, some informative photos.
We will then check whether a repair is possible and inform you about the next steps and any costs that may arise.

Is every repair free of charge?

No. Whether a repair is covered under our warranty depends on the cause of the damage.
Normal wear and tear, wearing parts, as well as damage caused by improper handling or external factors are generally not covered by the lifetime warranty on the leather.
However, even in such cases, we strive to offer a practical repair solution.

Can I get spare parts for older Alpenleder products?

For many products, we can still help even after a long period of time.
Whether a specific spare part is available depends on the product and its age. It is best to send us a photo of your item along with a short description of the required spare part.

What should I do if I can no longer find my product in the online shop?

Our product range is continuously evolving, and individual models may be discontinued over the years.
However, this does not automatically mean that we can no longer assist you with questions, spare parts, or repairs. Simply contact us with a photo or the product name.
